TO A FELLOW FASTER AT MEADOWLARK

May 19, 2020

Early Poems to Read Christmas Eve

Fellow faster, it's the stoop of your shoulders
That makes me want to tuck you in.
Now is the time for you
To put a do not disturb sign
Up against the world
And go into your shell.
For by surrendering,
You will gather strength
To return fresher.

I know how frightening it is
When weakness takes over.
I used to kick and thrash
Like a swimmer caught in a big wave.
Now, I'm a surfer riding with its crest.
We were so programmed
To do - to achieve -
Never taught how not to do.

I have learned how to accept weakness
As another taste of the smorgasbord
of life.
Weakness tunes me into writing those letters.
I wouldn't when I'm traveling fast,
And to listen to more music -
