My career is too big

April 17, 2020

POET-IN-RESIDENT AT RICE HOUSE
DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA MAY, 1995

My career is too big
for my britches.
I'm really just a crying toddler,
and I'm asked here and there
to talk, read and give workshops.
So I put on adult clothes,
the shoulder pads so phoney
which only covers my toothless
six year old smile.
Under my sometimes adult cover
is a lot of old pain.
