We go to laundromats
And put our clothes in wire baskets
And then into metal machines
That eat money.
We sit by ourselves
In separate chairs
With strangers
While mechanical forces
Wash our clothes.
We don't go down to the potent river
And stand barefooted on the earth and roots
While we wash our clothes
On rocks containing gems
And the memories of animals.
